Family Asilidae

in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.
- Body length 30mm, female

- The Red-legged Robber Fly has the very hairy abdomen. The abdomen is black
when viewed dorsally. All legs are in deep red colour. The antennae are black.
Wings are hyaline with brownish veins. Female have the abdomen segment 8 and 9
shining black.

- This is a large size robber fly. Robber Flies are air hunters.
They have strong legs which capture prey on flight. They are medium to very large
size flies with large eyes and necked head. They are active predators on flying
insects, unselective in prey species.
Their mouthparts are the triangular proboscis
which insert into prey and suck the juice.
