Family Calliphoridae
This page contains pictures and information about Large Greenbottle Blowflies that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia. They
are also known as Hairy maggot blowfly.

- Body length 8mm
-
- This fly is medium in size with metallic green body, with a distinct green
hue when viewed under bright sunlit conditions. It has a silvery face covered
with black hair. The anterior spiracle is white.
All legs are black. The Blowfly has the board and round
abdomen.

- As all the flies in genus Chrysomya,
they are carrion feeders. They may cause myiasis on live animal as
well.

- Larvae are predaceous, feeding on the larvae of earlier-arriving flies. The
larvae is one of the "hairy maggots". Bluebottle blowfly is
commonly used as an indicator of the post-mortem interval (PMI).
Carrion-breeding blowfly is important forensically because
the development times of their larvae are the indicator for determining the
minimum time since death.
