Bluebottle Blowfly - Subfamily Chrysomyinae

Family Calliphoridae

This page contains pictures and information about Bluebottle Blowflies in subfamily Chrysomyinae that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Flies in this subfamily are either metallic green or blue in colours. The antennal arista is strongly plumose. As the subfamily Calliphorinae, they are also carrion feeders. There is one genus Chrysomya in this subfamily.

Chrysomya incisuralis, body length 8mm
This Blowfly is metallic blue in colour with golden orange-brown bottom. The abdomen has orange-brown bands. Please check this page for more information.

Steelblue Bluebottle Blowfly

Chrysomya saffranea, body length 8mm 
This is a metallic greenish-blue Blowfly. The anterior spiracle is black. This Blowfly species look very similar to the C. megacephala below. We recognized this species by there is no black setulae hair around its vibrissa of this species. Male has eye facets above enlarged but no distinct line of demarcation from those below. Please check this page for more infromation on this Blowfly.

Chrysomya megacephala, body length 8mm, male, female
This is a metallic blue Blowfly. The anterior spiracle is black. This Blowfly species look very similar to the C. saffranea above. We recognized this species by there is black setulae hair around its vibrissa. Male has eye facets above much enlarged and sharply demarcated than those below. Please check this page for more information.

Large Greenbottle

Chrysomya rufifacies, body length 8mm 
This fly is medium in size with metallic green body, with a distinct green hue when viewed under bright sunlit conditions. It has a silvery face covered with black hair. The anterior spiracle is white. All legs are black. The Blowfly has the board and round abdomen. Please check this page for more information and pictures.
