Leaf-case Moths - Garrha sp.

Family Oecophoridae

This page contains information and pictures about Leaf-case Moths that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Body length 15mm

Garrha is a large genus with more than 40 species in Australia. Some species the adult moths look very similar. We found a few Garrha sp. moths in Brisbane and all put in this page. Genus Garrha caterpillars (see page bottom) make portable thin leaf-cases from dead Eucalyptus leaves upon which they feed.

Garrha sp. larval case
Garrha Moth Caterpillar live in portable case made of two cut oval-shaped dry eucalypt leaves attached by its silk. The caterpillar live inside and has the flat body. It occasionally partly comes out for feeding. Pupation occurs in the case without a cocoon. The pupa is flat as well. We found the the above larval case under loose gumtree bark.
