Black Prince - Psaltoda plaga

Family Cicadidae

This page contains pictures and information about Black Prince Cicadas that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Body length male 30mm, male

The common name Black Prince was loosely applied to almost any cicada which were black in colour. Then it is now exclusively used for Psaltoda plaga. The cicadas are black in colour with brown pronotal collar. They prefer main stems instead of tree trunk. Nymphs feed on roots of Eucalypts and many other native plants.

Found the above cicada entangled in spider web in Karawatha Forest. It was Jan 2010.
